Surespan Roots

It took over 35 years of hard work, but Surespan Construction grew from its humble Vancouver Island beginnings to become an international leader in the industry.

Starting out as a small forestry bridge supply and construction service, we’ve matured and expanded over the years to provide structural and architectural precast concrete installation, tunnel construction, equipment/operator rentals, welding, pile driving services and much more.

Looking back, it all started in 1972 when Nigel Bester, Principal of the Surespan Group of Companies, immigrated to Vancouver, B.C. from Grahamstown, South Africa.  Not long thereafter Nigel met his future wife Vivian  and in 1977 they decided to start their own business.  Using a borrowed chainsaw, Nigel built his first bridge at Kingcombe Inlet.

Surespan Construction initially found success by safely erecting bridges in remote, environmentally sensitive areas throughout British Columbia. Today, Surespan Construction is the recognized specialist in permanent and portable bridge supply and construction.

Nigel and Vivian could not be happier. It’s been over 35 years and everyone at Surespan Construction is proud to be on the frontier of unique and innovative bridge building systems and structural erection techniques. We’re proud of the work that we’ve completed and can’t wait to see what’s next.
